Historically Rooted. Boldy Restored

The History of The George

The George is more than a venue. It is a statement, a story of determination and a hallmark of thoughtful renovation.

Built in 1882, the National Block building was once a bustling retail center. It later housed a U.S. Marine Corps recruitment station, doctor’s offices, a restaurant, a commercial photography studio and a food laboratory. After many years as a boarding house, the building sat empty and neglected.

A New Story Takes Shape

Where many saw only the peeling paint and crumbling walls of a delipidated building, HF Hospitality saw sophistication, elegance and beauty. Partnering with True Inc., Jay Franke and David Herro took on the five-year restoration that would not only save the building from demolition but ensure the original character and charm was preserved as well.

Like its namesake, Milwaukee founding father George Walker, The George is a welcoming space that places an emphasis on conviviality. Reborn with a fresh purpose in hospitality, The George offers a timeless setting where the past will live on to inspire, create and elevate celebrations for years to come.
